Suzanna Zweifel Barclay
I didn't know my passion for a long time, or that passion even existed. I felt I was responding to basic skills and built on my experiences. I knew as a 20 year old that my "tribe" has to be found somewhere else than what I've called home. I've found inspiration and cultural awakenings in community settings like Findhorn Scotland and Kibbutz life in Israel. Later I had the good fortune to learn about Bio-Dynamic's with the founder of homeopathy and great scholar Rudolf Steiner at Emerson College in England. Which brought me to the tropics of Dominican Republic and the Hawaiian Island of Maui. My training in how to listen and being obedient to nature by leaving my trace better than I've found it, has been my mantra. Going into a body work education which embodied Yoga, Pilates and Massage techniques taught me once more to be a true listener to each individual that I come in contact. The reflection to my learning experience in the healing arts is knowing that miracles can happen in simply connecting one person at a time.

3/15/16 Presentation to Rose Villa residents
Good afternoon. I am Suzie Barclay. I was born in Glarus, a small town in a mountain valley south of Zurich. Glarus is in the German speaking part of Switzerland. After working as a nursing aid I went to college in England in my twenties. I moved to Hawaii in 1986. I began studying massage on Maui in 1989 and discovered hands on treatment is second nature for me – probably because my Swiss parents believed daily massages were a way to help keep tired and aching bodies healthy. I was fortunate to have studied under excellent teachers in Cranio Sacral, Rolfing, Polarity, and Pilates methods. At this time I have professional credentials from 3 states, OR, WA and HI.
My work has evolved over 26 years of practicing massage techniques, movement therapy, and breath- work. Recently I have added Aromatherapy. I provide individualized treatment by reading the body with my hands, and then tailoring my approach to your needs at the time. This makes my treatment very effective for relieving pain and helping ease the symptoms of chronic conditions.
The best way I can explain my approach is that I focus on the fascia, which is the glue that connects the body parts, to help keep you flexible and healthy. The fascia is the connective tissue which permits the smooth, pain-free functioning of our physical body. I draw from a multitude of tools; I began my career on the Island of Maui, at Makawao Physical Therapy. That ignited my interest in the proactive and preventative care – because I've seen many relapses after surgeries that could have been prevented by prompt massage therapy starting right after hospitalization.
CranioSacral courses were interwoven as a means to sensitize my assessments and to enhance the effectiveness of treating trauma induced issues and or chronic pain. I was trained by the Upledger Institute over a period of 3 years.
It is the refinement of the therapist that can recognize the status of the fascia connections and help provide the nuanced treatment necessary to help address the stiffness and pain.
This is a long journey, at least it has been for me. As the saying goes; if I practice long enough I may get good at it. After living in Hawaii for 8 years I was invited to work at the Sun Valley lodge. Sun Valley is very much a resort town nestled within rolling mountains, with a mystical flair for the Hollywood celebrity lifestyle. Mostly, Sun Valley was good to me. I was willing to work many hours during the seasons and skied my fill. I had the opportunity to work on celebrity clients, including Demi Moore and John F. Kennedy Jr. I lived in Idaho for 16 years before moving to Portland in 2010 after the 2006 economic recession.
I'd like to quickly summarize what to expect in a treatment after signing up. We have options of course. Either, stay clothed or comfortably covered, through-out the treatment. The way it works is, you lie (or sit) and I begin to place my hands on you. At the end of an exhalation, I begin gently connecting through the layers, allowing the muscles and fascia to soften, allowing more space and lengthening to occur. I apply only sufficient pressure to engage without negating or reacting.
My intention is to SINK and to follow the body's intent. I may challenge, guide or suggest ever so gently, allowing the body a chance to invite this “experience”. A little bit at a time I'm finding the body's willingness to be less resistant and more open...getting closer and closer to your body's blue print. In this way my patient moves away from discomfort and closer to ease and wellness.
Over the years I've recognized how valuable core strength principles are in a person's rehabilitation. I have found that it is this attention to the refinement and perfection of the QUALITY of the movements that sets Pilates work apart.
My treatment encourages a team-work approach between me and you which culminates a relaxing and healing individual experience.
I like to say your body does the healing, I have no say in the process. I like to assist your body's healing power, and sometimes I need to spend extra time focusing on specific areas. The pressure I use and techniques I apply vary depending on the treatment need.
Speaking of teamwork, I'd like to add an additional very important compound into the mix. That is, each individual has our own inner clock which determines when we're ready to shift our discomfort or heal. I'm not the healer, the bodies are, but I'm glad to be the facilitator.
I am very excited to be working in the beautiful Rose Villa community. This comfortable setting reminds me of garden-like settings I enjoyed at Emerson College and in Maui. Thank you for coming today! I would like to meet you and answer any questions. I hope to serve you and become a trusted part of the Rose Villa community for a long time.
