Medical Massage

Intuitively connecting with whatever that ails you.

Picture
What count's in life is not the mere fact that we have lived.
It is what difference we have made to the lives of others
that will determine the significance of the life we lead.

~ Nelson Mandela

Proactive Care

Being proactive; in order to meet the resistance (fibrosis) I have the ability to connect and assist you in finding the length in your fine tuning muscles.

Preventive Care

Surgery of any kind always results in the formation of scar tissue; which can cause a reduced range of motion (which may indicate further surgery) which we want to avoid.
Maintain Range of Motion
  • MOVEMENT THERAPY - especially passive stretching and any type of active exercise can help maintain muscle tone and joint range of motion in a client with sciatica or shoulder/neck spasms.
  • CROSS FIBER FRICTION - of the tendons, ligaments and joint capsules can prevent fibrosis in clients whose range of motion is limited due to muscle weakness.
  • Hot or alternating hot/cold packs can also support this effort.

Myofascial Pain Syndrome
Chronic Pain in muscles and/or fascia, tender trigger points (more specific points in body) and limited range of motion.

Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia more general located points in the body.
IDENTIFYING and REMOVING the cause of the problem is a prerequisite for long term relief of these tender points.

Osteoarthritis
Degenerative joint disease. Gradual degeneration in cartilage. Affecting joints in fingers, spine, hip and knee. As cartilage breaks down new bone tissue forms under its surface and protrusions of bone (spurs) tend to grow at the joint margins.
  • ISOMETRIC EXERCISE of muscles can help the client retain strength while not causing pain; since the joint doesn't have to move.

Rheumatoid Arthritis
Abnormal immune cells accumulate in synovial joints.
  • During the non-inflammatory phases MASSAGE is HELPFUL in REDUCING the painful muscle spasms associated with joint destruction. During the sub-acute phase; GENTLE passive RANGE of MOTION can help the client retain FLEXIBILITY.

Multiple Sclerosis
Gradual loss of myelin sheaths (details are significant in his/her signs and symptoms so that areas of numbness are treated with specific care and in contact with treating MD).
  • SLOW MOTION REJUVENATE YOGA/QIGONG and/or THAJ MASSAGE can help the client maintain joint range of motion and DECREASE the POSSIBILITY of MUSCLE CONTRACTURES.

Parkinson's
Deficiency of a brain transmitterDopamine in the Cerebrum.
  • HANDS on THERAPY can be quite HELPFUL in STRESS REDUCTION as well as helping RELIEVE MUSCLE SPASMS and IMPROVE CIRCULATION to muscular tissues.
Spasms
  • Spasms may be found in muscles that compensate for those weakened by compression of a nerve (like sciatic, achilles or brachial plexus).
  • Applied massage can EFFECTIVELY REDUCE SPASMS.
  • Edema is defined as an increased amount of fluid in the interstitial spaces between cells; often depends on specific causes.
  • Congestive heart failure; as well as liver and kidney congestion can back fluid.
  • Internal Congestion; like, connective tissue buildup following Mastectomy can block Lymph Vessels.
  • External Obstruction; during Pregnancy the enlarging Vena Cavae, causing fluid accumilation and swelling in the ankles and lower extremity.
  • GENTLE passive RANGE OF MOTION can help promote the flow of lymph.

Osteoporosis
  • Bones lose much of their Collagen and Mineral.
  • GENTLE STRETCHING can help reduce spasms and Increase RANGE of MOTION. WEIGHT BEARING (esp. WALKING) often recommended as a means of improving bone mass.
  • CONSULT with MD about NUTRITION and SUPPLEMENTS (CALCIUM & VIT>D).

Sprains
Caused by trauma or movements that cause ligaments to stretch beyond its normal length. Sprains heal more slowly because ligaments have no direct blood supply.
  • REST, ICE, COMPRESSION and ELEVATION of the joint is the treatment choice, esp. during the acute phase.
  • MASSAGE of the TISSUES proximal to the injury can reduce swelling. The goal is to PREVENT ADHESIONS between ligament and nearby bones. As well prevent from repeated inflammation of the ligament; joint may become lax and tend to subluxate and dislocate more easily.

Strains
Strains are an excessively pulled muscle.  Strains usually occur where the tendon attaches to the bone. There may have been a "snapping" sound at the moment of the strain, esp. if it is severe.
  • Only 1st and 2nd degree Strains should be treated with MASSAGE.
  • A 3rd degree causes tearing of more than half of the muscles fibers with marked inflammation. Pain and palpable defect that may require surgical repair.
